Vaccines
Black Birthright requires participants to obtain vaccines as recommended by the Center for Disease Control. (Additional information can be found on the CDC website.) Vaccine recommendations include routine vaccines which most Scholars enrolled in school already have, as well as supplemental travel vaccines. The complete vaccine list is as follows.
Routine Vaccinations:
Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine
Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine
Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine
Polio vaccine
Flu vaccine
Hepatitis A vaccine
Hepatitis B vaccine
Travel Vaccinations:
Typhoid vaccine
Yellow fever vaccine
Note: When scheduling the medical appointment to be cleared for travel, Scholars should inform the physician’s office that they need the yellow fever vaccine. Some physicians do not carry yellow fever vaccines and the Scholar may be referred to another office for the vaccine.
Covid-19 Vaccinations:
Black Birthright requirements for covid-19 vaccinations will be based entirely on what is required to enter/exit the United States and our destination country at the time of travel.
Malaria
Malaria is present in Sub-Saharan Africa. All Black Birthright Scholars must obtain a prescription for malaria prevention medication and take the prescription according to schedule. There are no exceptions whatsoever.
Water
For the duration of our trip, we will drink bottled or filtered water, obtained from authorized vendors. Scholars will bring reusable water bottles that will be refilled throughout the day. Hydration is critical for an enjoyable, healthy travel experience and Black Birthright Chaperones will ensure Scholars are consuming sufficient water each day, all day.
Medical Policy
Black Birthright maintains a comprehensive Medical, Health & Wellness Policy to which all Scholars and parents must adhere. Click on the link below to access the policy:
