Supervision

Scholars will be accompanied by adult chaperones - one adult chaperone for every three to four Scholars. Chaperones:

  • Are at least 25 years of age

  • Undergo formal background checks by a certified third-party

  • Have no criminal history whatsoever

  • Have extensive professional experience working with middle and/or high school students

  • Have experience leading groups of middle and/or high school students on international travel

  • Are CPR/First-Aid/AED certified

  • Are upstanding members of their respective communities invested in the Black Birthright mission

  • Participate in The Salon: Awakening Your African Mind

  • Participate in Black Birthright activities prior to and during travel as requested


Accommodation

Scholars will stay in modern, secure and private accommodations. Scholars will share rooms (two per room), but each Scholar will have their own bed. We will announce the selected accommodation to Scholars and their parents privately. (It’s unsafe to publicly share housing arrangements for minors on travel.) Accommodations must meet rigorous criteria to ensure safety and comfort. Review our Accommodation Requirements for additional information.


Transportation

All transportation in country will be private - provided by the same licensed and insured driver for the duration of the trip. All Scholars and chaperones will travel in the same vehicle and under no circumstance will Scholars travel from one location to another alone. Transportation services must meet rigorous criteria to ensure safety and comfort. Review our Transportation Requirements for additional information.


Insurance

Black Birthright will purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy for each Scholar. The policy will cover any medical-related expenses during travel.
